Award-winning geobiologist Dr. A. Hope Jahren to keynote AHPA Member Meeting

Published: Friday, February 10, 2017

Scientist and bestselling author Dr. A. Hope Jahren will deliver the keynote address at the American Herbal Products Association's (AHPA's) Annual Member Meeting and Breakfast on March 9 at the Natural Products Expo West trade show in Anaheim, Calif.

Dr. Jahren's 2016 book, Lab Girl, debuted on the New York Times bestseller list and has been celebrated as both an insightful memoir and a meditation on the lives of plants. Her poetic descriptions provide a unique perspective on plants that helps make the science of botanicals accessible to nonscientists.

"I think we get used to not seeing the green things around us ... they become the backdrop of our lives. And I think you actively have to ask somebody to put that in the foreground," Dr. Jahren said in a 2016 interview with NPR. "I'm not saying we need to save the trees. I'm saying we need to not overlook their capacity to save us."

Sometimes described as a geobiologist, Dr. Jahren is known for her work using stable isotope analysis to analyze fossil forests, helping to discover that, 45 million years ago, swathes of the Arctic were covered in large populations of deciduous conifers. Dr. Jahren currently holds the J. Tuzo Wilson professorship at the University of Oslo's Centre for Earth Evolution and Dynamics in Norway. Her research focuses on living and fossil organisms and how they are chemically linked to the global environment.

"AHPA is honored to have Dr. Jahren as this year's keynote speaker at our Annual Member Meeting," said AHPA President Michael McGuffin. "She is a pioneer in her field of research and has been influential in generating increased appreciation for plants and the natural world. AHPA members will gain valuable insight from her unique perspective on plants."

An award-winning scientist, Dr. Jahren has been pursuing independent research in paleobiology since 1996. Time magazine named her one of the world's "100 Most Influential People" in 2016. She is the recipient of three Fulbright awards and is one of four scientists, and the only woman, to have been awarded both of the Young Investigator Medals given within the earth sciences. Dr. Jahren was a tenured professor at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu from 2008 to 2016, where she built the Isotope Geobiology Laboratories with support from the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health.

The annual meeting also features presentations from industry leaders on legal and market trends, AHPA's board of trustees' election, and the presentation of the 2017 AHPA Awards.
