IADSA October 2018 Newsflash

AHPA is an active member of IADSA and is distributing the IADSA Newsflash as a member benefit. IADSA is an association focused on the globalization of food supplement markets and regulatory challenges. This issue of the IADSA Newsflash covers:

  • An update on Codex Alimentarius some of its work items is provided, as well as IADSA thoughts on potential future impacts on the supplement industry
  • Taiwan has expanded its food allergen labeling regulation to include 11 allergen substances (increases from 6)
  • The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has opened a call for data to perform a safety assessment for astaxanthin as a novel food
  • EFSA issued an opinion that the use of Monacolin K could lead to severe adverse effects on the musculoskeletal system, which may lead to restrictions on use of red yeast rice supplements containing this compound
  • Italy revised its Plants Decree which now provides a single positive list of plants for use in food supplements
  • Latvia provided notification of new draft rules for botanicals, including plants and parts of plants restricted from use in foods
