The American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) submitted comments yesterday to the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) to request that pullulan continue to be allowed to be used in encapsulated herbs marketed as “made with organic [specified ingredients or food group(s)]” under the National Organic Program (NOP).
AHPA's comments support a petition submitted by the Organic Trade Association (OTA) to request that pullulan be added to the National List, which identifies a limited number of non-organic substances that may be used in or on processed organic products.
"Many AHPA members expressed concerns that there is a lack of reasonably available alternatives to non-organic pullulan capsules and prohibiting this ingredient in herbal capsules that are otherwise NOP organic could cause significant business disruptions," said AHPA President Michael McGuffin. "Adding pullulan to the National List would avert significant disruption to the organic dietary supplement industry and encourage commercial development of certified organic pullulan."
NOSB is scheduled to conduct a preliminary review of the OTA pullulan petition at a meeting scheduled later in October. AHPA will keep members informed as this issue progresses.
"AHPA greatly appreciates the efforts of OTA and member companies to prevent industry disruptions by petitioning NOSB on this important issue," McGuffin said.
