AHPA statement on confirmation of Dr. Gottlieb as FDA commissioner

Dr. Gottlieb's views on dietary supplements are consistent with industry views

Published: Wednesday, May 10, 2017

American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) President Michael McGuffin issued the following statement regarding the Senate confirmation of Dr. Scott Gottlieb as FDA commissioner.

"AHPA congratulates Dr. Gottlieb on his confirmation and looks forward to supporting FDA efforts to enforce dietary supplement laws and regulations as intended by Congress. Dr. Gottlieb's views on dietary supplements and his strong support for appropriate use of truthful and nonmisleading scientific information are consistent with industry views and an indication that FDA will be able to work effectively with the industry under Dr. Gottlieb's leadership."

Background

Dr. Scott Gottlieb was confirmed as FDA commissioner by the U.S. Senate on May 9. During a recent Senate committee hearing, Dr. Gottlieb testified that he uses dietary supplements every day, supports consumer access to these products and believes "they serve an important role in health promotion for millions of Americans." He also said that he believes "the regulatory framework established under DSHEA is the right one" and would be committed to "enforcing DSHEA, as intended by Congress."
