IADSA update on international supplement regulations

AHPA is an active member of IADSA and is distributing the IADSA Newsflash as a member benefit. IADSA is an association focused on the globalization of food supplement markets and regulatory challenges. This issue of the IADSA Newsflash includes:

• Thailand is expanding its positive list of botanicals that can be used in supplements from the current 80 to approximately 250 by the end of the year.
• China has created a work plan to take enforcement action against health food products making fraudulent and illegal health claims.
• New Zealand and Australia are legalizing hemp seeds as a food, which will allow for the sale of low THC-hemp seed food products.
• European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is evaluating the presence of pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) in foods, in particular herbal teas and infusions; EFSA’s findings will be reviewed by the European Commission which is considering specific limits on PAs in supplements.
• Italy is close to the end of the process of formal adoption of the BELFRIT list for botanicals permitted for use in food supplements.
