Our Mission

The American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) is the national trade association and voice of the herbal products industry. Founded in 1982, AHPA's mission is to promote the responsible and sustainable commerce of herbal products to ensure that consumers have informed access to a wide variety of safe herbal goods. AHPA’s Vision is for high quality herbal products to be readily accessible to and broadly used by consumers.

Our Expertise

AHPA has particular expertise on the history, science, and regulation of botanicals while its work also has significant influence on non-herbal dietary supplements. Similarly, AHPA expends its resources on issues in the U.S. marketplace and in the international arena, wherever member interests are served.

Our Members

AHPA is comprised of more than 350 domestic and international companies conducting business as growers, processors, manufacturers, and marketers of herbs and herbal products. AHPA members’ herbal products are in tea, beverage, dietary supplement, sports nutrition, personal care, pet and other product categories. AHPA membership also includes individuals, companies and organizations who serve the industry, including consultants, attorneys, media, researchers, educators, and medical professionals.

Guidance: Federal Labeling Requirements for Herbal Dietary Supplements

Updated to reflect changes from May 2016 Final Rule revising FDA’s nutrition labeling regulations

AHPA has revised it's labeling guidance for herbal dietary supplements to cover updated nutrition labeling requirements for foods and dietary supplements that are scheduled to take effect January 1, 2020 for manufacturers with $10 million or more in annual sales and January 1, 2021 for smaller manufacturers.

Dietary supplement recalls are relatively infrequent according to recent FDA data

Two percent of more than 800 recalls initiated in 2019 involved dietary supplement products

Recall data from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) shows that 14 of 803 (1.7 percent) recorded recalls initiated in 2019 involved dietary supplements, and among these, three were Class I recalls (the most serious recall class), according to an article published in the August 2019 AHPA Report.

The AHPA Foundation for Education and Research on Botanicals (AHPA ERB Foundation) has committed to provide financial support for the American ginseng program to be presented as part of the 2020 Smithsonian Folklife Festival, an annual 10-day event that takes place on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The Foundation is seeking matching funds from AHPA members to increase the Foundation’s support of this program.
