IADSA update on international supplement regulations

  • China has updated the dosage forms recognized for Health Food filings.
  • Thailand has released updated quality requirements for foods and dietary supplements that contain hempseed and its derivatives.
  • European Union (EU) has issued a regulation regarding certain hydroxyanthracene derivatives (HADs) in foods and food supplements, impacting aloes and other botanicals containing these compounds.
  • EU is consulting with member states regarding astaxanthin following a 2020 EFSA opinion on its safety as a novel food.
  • The European Commission has published guidance on the EU mutual recognition regulations.
  • The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment has recognized an acute reference dose for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) for use in risk assessment of hemp containing foods.
  • The Netherlands is considering restrictions on the use of preparations of St. John’s Wort.
  • Argentina has added aloe vera to its list of recognized botanicals for use in food and beverages.
  • Ecuador has issued regulations for hemp products.
  • Colombia has drafted regulations for the marketing of food supplements in gyms and other sports-related facilities.
