IADSA update on international supplement regulations

AHPA is an active member of IADSA and is distributing the IADSA Newsflash as a member benefit. IADSA is an association focused on the globalization of food supplement markets and regulatory challenges. This issue of the IADSA Newsflash covers:

• The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) issued a report regarding potential exposure to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) from high consumption of hemp-based foods
• The European Commission is finalizing limits for pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) in food supplements
• Italy has set maximum limits on THC in hemp-derived foods and ingredients
• The French ban on titanium dioxide in food supplements took effect on January 1, 2020
• The German Institute for Risk Assessment has issued a recommendation against the consumption of red yeast rice supplements, and advises their use only after medical consultation
• Germany has published a 2nd version of its Stoffliste of botanicals, an alternative version of the Belfrit list
• The Netherlands has published a template for performing safety assessment for food supplements
• The Netherlands has warned consumers against consuming certain St. John’s wort products due to contamination with unacceptable levels of PAs
• South Africa has issued a set of FAQs for Cannabis and related substances
• Eurasian Economic Union has published an expanded negative list for botanicals in food supplements
