IADSA update on international supplement regulations

AHPA is an active member of IADSA and is distributing the IADSA Newsflash as a member benefit. IADSA is an association focused on the globalization of food supplement markets and regulatory challenges. This issue of the IADSA Newsflash covers:

  • Korea is amending its functional food code to include precautions for products containing the following ingredients: ginseng/Red ginseng; chlorella; milk thistle; marigold extract; non-digestible maltodextrin; aloe gel; methyl sulfonylmethane/dimethyl sulfone (MSM); and vitamin K2.
  • Korea has updated its functional food code to recognize additional mineral sources and limits for EPA DHA.
  • In Europe, The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is assessing the potential risk of vitamin D overdose.
  • Alpha lipoic acid is under review by EFSA, who concluded that it may represent a risk to individuals with insulin autoimmune syndrome, but were unable to quantify the risk.
  • The European Commission may place monacolin K under scrutiny for 4 years, allowing for companies to submit additional data on its safety.
  • Belgium has published new opinions on the use of Boswellia serrata, Hieracium pilosella, Valeriana officinalis, and Mentha x piperita.
  • France has issued a caution regarding intake of coumarin, and essential oils of cinnamon which contain high levels of coumarin.
  • Germany has called for titanium dioxide to be withdrawn as a food additive in Europe, following an EFSA statement that it could no longer be considered to be safe.
