  • The Indian Food Safety and Standards Authority has published draft regulation named Ayurveda Aahar, based on the tradition of Ayurveda foods.
  • The European Commission is consulting on a draft Regulation restricting the use of green tea catechins in food supplements. Under the proposed provisions, green tea supplements should bear warnings and the intake of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) should not exceed 800 mg a day. Traditional green teas and reconstituted drinks are not included in the proposal.
  • The European Commission has ordered a mass recall of products contaminated with ethylene oxide, impacting many food supplement companies operating in the European Union. This concerns food supplements containing certain botanical ingredients, such as spirulina, psyllium, ashwaghanda, moringa, curcuma, bamboo, ginger, fenugreek and pepper.
  • The Czech Republic has published a positive list for botanicals, based on the BELFRIT list compiled by Belgium, France, and Italy. A transition period is being established for the removal of titanium dioxide as a food additive.
  • Germany has set a limit of 21 mg/day for intake of synephrine; supplements containing doses higher than this limit should bear a warning that no other foods containing synephrine should be consumed.
  • Italy is introducing a new warning statement for supplements containing Garcinia cambogia.
  • Ukraine has introduced a regulation limiting the definition of “dietary supplement” to only include vitamins and minerals.
