International Alliance of Dietary/Food Supplements Associations (IADSA) December 2015 Newsflash

AHPA is an active member of IADSA and distributes the IADSA Newsflash as a member benefit. IADSA is an association focused on the globalization of food supplement markets and regulatory challenges. This issue of the IADSA Newsflash includes:

• Progress on the development and implementation of the ASEAN Health Supplements and Traditional Medicines
• In China, delays are occurring with the development of provisions for health foods/food supplements
• China is also conducting public consultation on measures intended to strengthen its food safety system
• New Zealand is conducting consultation on draft regulations for natural health products
• Switzerland has adopted a new food supplements law which includes a negative list for plants. This list is based on the German plants list and includes some plants that are accepted on the Belfrit list.
• The European Commission has launched a road map for health claims with a specific focus on botanicals and nutrient profiles. Establishment of claims for botanicals has been on hold since 2010.
• Europe has set limits for polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in two categories of supplements, including botanicals.
• Summary information on how different countries distinguish between supplements and other product categories is presented.
