AHPA partnered with Dyad Labs to present a two-day workshop on March 21-22 that provided 16 attendees with a basic understanding of chromatography and hands-on lab experience.
“Excellent training," said one attendee. "I had limited exposure to chromatography prior to this workshop. I now understand the basic theory and application, which was taught in a clear, hands-on manner. It was also helpful to interact with top vendors and better understand their technology and unique capabilities.”
The workshop was held at Dyad Labs' brand-new, 30,000 square foot facility that houses nine separate labs in Salt Lake City, UT. Dyad's instrumentation capabilities include multiple Liquid Chromatography with Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) systems and ultra-pressure liquid chromatography (UPLC) with photo-diode array (PDA) and MS detection. They also include GC/MS/MS and GC/FID analyses; as well as trace metal and mineral testing services by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectroscopy (ICP-MS) and Direct Mercury Analyzer (DMA). Fat, fiber, glutens, nitrogen analysis, FTIR, water activity, density testing, stability, and several other chemical tests.
Chromatography is an essential tool in quality control and characterization of botanical ingredients and finished products as required by current good manufacturing practices (cGMP) regulations (21 CFR part 111).
"Chromatography methods are a relatively simple, versatile, convenient, and sensitive way to determine and document quality and support specifications, especially for highly processed herbal ingredients or combinations of herbs and extracts," said AHPA Chief Science Officer Holly Johnson, Ph.D. "Chromatography provides quantitative information about the main active constituents or marker compounds present in herbal products and can be used in fingerprinting of herbs."
Dyad Labs has evolved into a completely independent ISO/IEC 17025:2005 accredited contract laboratory offering a full range of chemical and microbiological testing services with the capacity to meet the rapidly evolving needs of the nutraceutical industry.
