IADSA update on international supplement regulations

  • The China State Administration for Market Research has revised the claims catalogue to remove three claims – the 24 remaining claims will be slightly modified.
  • Switzerland and Korea are reassessing the use of titanium dioxide as a food ingredient following its ban in the European Union.
  • Korea is proposing changes to its health function food code to add a function for ginseng and to remove aloe whole leaf.
  • Singapore recently updated its Health Supplement Guidelines.
  • European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is calling for data on pullulan, including safety evaluation, technical data, information on the production organism, use levels, biological and toxicological data.
  • French safety agency ANSES will be undertaking an assessment on botanicals reported in the national nutrivigilance system to determine the need for specific safety assessments.
  • UK is also reassessing the toxicity of titanium dioxide due to concerns about the EU assessment that resulted in its ban.
  • South Africa has updated its guidelines concerning registration of complementary medicines containing cannabidiol.
  • Colombia, Costa Rica, and Ecuador have new regulations regarding production of hemp.
  • Belarus has banned imports of supplement products from certain Western countries until July 2022.
