    IADSA update on international supplement regulations

    • Key global supplement sector developments of the past year, including the increasing global influence of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)
    • The new administration in New Zealand withdrew the pending regulations for Natural Health and Supplementary Products
    • EFSA published a scientific opinion on products containing hydroxyanthracene derivatives, such as those in botanical laxative products containing these substances
    • As of January 1, 2018 EU Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 for novel foods is in effect; a list of authorized novel foods has been published
    • France is publishing new maximum levels for vitamins and minerals in supplements, potentially including maximums for children and warning statements for some nutrients
    • German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment has published proposed non-binding maximum levels for vitamins and minerals in supplements
    • Argentina has a new regulation for the labeling food, including supplements, for the presence of allergens
    • Brazil has a public consultation on a regulatory framework for food supplements, including a positive list of allowed ingredients
    • Several other South American countries have ongoing regulatory initiatives that impact food supplement products
    • Ukraine has revised recommended intake levels for vitamins, minerals and other nutrients
