Becoming Better Stewards

How can companies sourcing medicinal plants from around the world become better stewards for the people, plants, and ecosystems on which they depend?

The SHP Sustainability and Regenerative Practices Toolkit is a collection of practical resources and best practices, specific to the herb and botanical business sectors, that businesses of any size can utilize to become more socially and environmentally responsible. Ultimately, it provides an ethos of caring for the people and planet from where herbs originate.

This guide provides useful resources and inspiring ideas to deepen existing efforts to solve issues of sustainable stewardship and regenerative collaboration with plants, planet, and people. We also hope it awakens conversations within and among companies about how to collaborate to address pressing challenges including urban migration (of wildcrafters), over-harvesting, soil depletion, climate impacts, and non-point contamination, among others.

These materials are provided for free through the generous support of our SHP inaugural underwriters and donors.

What is Included?

The 14-section, 52-page Toolkit serves as a roadmap for companies at any stage in the journey. The structure presents a program to use for regular meetings for all staff or explored by individuals. Use it as a resource for implementing sustainability practices in a company or to inspire individual responsibility.

The SHP Toolkit Collection includes the following:

  • Videos highlighting stories from the field and/or case studies to learn about each topic in the SHP Toolkit through meaningful examples of best practices.
  • Discussion questions to reflect on those examples and how they apply to the unique challenges of each company.
  • Action steps in each section to deepen the learning experience.
  • Periodic webinars organized in a question-and-answer format with experts in particular botanical sustainability topics.
  • Topics will include: The Business Case for Sustainability, Creating a Culture of Sustainability and Regeneration, Sourcing Raw Materials, Relationships through the Supply Network, among others.

Why it Matters

Our own health and wellness is inextricably connected with the health and wellness of the human and ecological systems in which we live and on which we depend. Many of us as individuals and as companies are asking how we want to emerge from this current pandemic crisis. How can we put in place systems that recognize and build on our interdependence, practices that support biodiversity, social equity, healthy soils? This toolkit provides resources to begin or continue this journey.

This guide is an organic, evolving resource. Please let us know what works and how you find it most effective. Also let us know of other material you would like to see or of helpful resources we haven’t included.
