Support for AHPA ERB Foundation’s funding of research on goldenseal continues

January 2022: Interested individuals and companies encouraged to donate to this crucial research

Published: Tuesday, February 8, 2022

In 2021, the American Herbal Products Association Foundation for Education and Research on Botanicals (AHPA ERB Foundation) announced its commitment to funding a five-year harvest impact study on goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) led by principal investigator Katie Commender, Agroforestry Program Director, Appalachian Sustainable Development.

The Foundation gratefully acknowledges recent contributions toward this study from the following donors:

  • Horst Mueggenburg Stiftung [Horst Mueggenburg Foundation]
  • The Vitamin Shoppe
  • Yellow Emperor
  • Gaia Herbs

The above organizations join the following donors who have also made valued contributions toward this research:

  • Vitality Works Foundation
  • Herbalist & Alchemist
  • Herb Pharm
  • Mueggenburg Farms
  • Mountain Rose Herbs
  • Ohio River Ginseng
  • Duncan’s Botanical Products
  • Native Botanicals
  • Aveda Corporation

“This crucial research would not be possible without the generosity of these esteemed donors,” said Jane Wilson, AHPA Director of Program Development and ERB Foundation Secretary. “Their donations exemplify their commitment to supporting the herbal industry and the research needed to ensure goldenseal remains viable as a species and herbal ingredient. We encourage others interested in supporting this research to donate. Contributions of any amount are greatly appreciated.”

About the study
Goldenseal is a long-lived deciduous forest perennial whose rhizomes are harvested for use as an ingredient in dietary supplements and other herbal products. The purpose of this project is to improve the understanding of harvest impacts on natural and forest-farmed populations of goldenseal and to develop recommendations for harvest methods, intensities, and cultivation that support the long-term viability of this species. A complementary objective is to share knowledge of goldenseal with stakeholders, by providing timely and useful information about research findings on best practices and management. The research team will manage harvest studies to be replicated over multiple growing sites in southwest Ohio, southwest Virginia, eastern Kentucky and West Virginia, in natural forest and forest-farmed settings.

The AHPA ERB Foundation grant supports research on goldenseal populations, root production, and effects of varying rates of harvest on plant population health and recovery across multiple growing sites in order to inform sustainable harvest and management decisions for the herb.
