Searchable Databases

Several internet-based databases provide access current information on herbs, as well as on dietary supplements such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids and others. Click on the link above to go to a sampling of those which may be most useful.

Scientific Journals

It is probably not possible to stay abreast of all of the information that continues to be published about herbs in peer-reviewed scientific journals. There are any number of such publications, with areas of specialization that extend from a plant’s basic botany and nomenclature to research on its chemical make-up and cultivation, and then into human uses, whether by the indigenous people where a plant is first found, or in a clinical setting with an emphasis on evaluating safety and efficacy. Though even the list that follows (click on the link above) would require extensive hours to review, AHPA believes that each of the journals listed in this section can provide valuable scientific information about herbs.

U.S. Federal Research Funding

Quite a number of federal agencies in the United States fund research related to herbs. For example, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has provided financing for a grower in Georgia to develop an organic crop of goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) and quite a number of the studies that are funded by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) at NIH are devoted to developing a better clinical understanding of many of the herbs that have been in use for centuries. The sites in this section, while each has its flaws, can provide assistance in keeping up with all such research.
