Guidance: Federal Labeling Requirements for Herbal Dietary Supplements

Updated to reflect changes from May 2016 Final Rule revising FDA’s nutrition labeling regulations

AHPA has revised it's labeling guidance for herbal dietary supplements to cover updated nutrition labeling requirements for foods and dietary supplements that are scheduled to take effect January 1, 2020 for manufacturers with $10 million or more in annual sales and January 1, 2021 for smaller manufacturers.

Guidance on test methods used to identify ethanol

Guidance covers a number of physical, chemical, spectrometric and chromatographic methods for the identification of ethanol.

Guidance on foreign matter limits in herbal ingredients

Guidance recommends plant parts of the same herbal raw material species, other than those named in specifications, should not exceed 5% (by weight), and all other foreign matter should not exceed 2% (by weight)

American Herbal Products Association and ASTM International Sign MOU on Cannabis Standards

June 8, 2017: Groups will work together on standards for the cannabis industry

Global standards organization ASTM International and the American Herbal Products Association announced a Memorandum of Understanding to work together on standards for the cannabis industry. The news comes in advance of the first meeting of ASTM International’s new cannabis committee, June 11 and 12.

Labeling guidance for fungi products

Guidance becomes effective March 9, 2019

The Board of Trustees of the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) at its March 9, 2017 meeting authorized issuance of guidance for labeling products that contain fungi ingredients.
