Our Mission

The American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) is the national trade association and voice of the herbal products industry. Founded in 1982, AHPA's mission is to promote the responsible and sustainable commerce of herbal products to ensure that consumers have informed access to a wide variety of safe herbal goods. AHPA’s Vision is for high quality herbal products to be readily accessible to and broadly used by consumers.

Our Expertise

AHPA has particular expertise on the history, science, and regulation of botanicals while its work also has significant influence on non-herbal dietary supplements. Similarly, AHPA expends its resources on issues in the U.S. marketplace and in the international arena, wherever member interests are served.

Our Members

AHPA is comprised of more than 350 domestic and international companies conducting business as growers, processors, manufacturers, and marketers of herbs and herbal products. AHPA members’ herbal products are in tea, beverage, dietary supplement, sports nutrition, personal care, pet and other product categories. AHPA membership also includes individuals, companies and organizations who serve the industry, including consultants, attorneys, media, researchers, educators, and medical professionals.

Established in 1982, AHPA has been proudly serving members for four decades

In 2022, the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) celebrates our 40th anniversary. Over four decades, AHPA has seen significant growth – now with more than 400 member companies across five continents, 17 committees representing key areas of industry interest, and valuable resources that include second editions of AHPA’s Botanical Safety Handbook and Herbs of Commerce.

Amazon updates dietary supplement compliance program

November 2021: Sets new requirements for 3rd-party certification and for sexual enhancement and weight loss / weight management products

Early this month, Amazon updated its policy for vendors of dietary supplements on the Amazon platform. Amazon has maintained such a policy since at least late 2018, and has amended the policy on several occasions in the interim.

AHPA releases Spanish language educational materials for prevention of pyrrolizidine alkaloid contamination

September 2021: New educational materials provide a brief overview of the topic of PA containing weeds that are common in many agricultural areas

AHPA has published Spanish language versions of educational resources that finished product marketers and botanical ingredient companies can provide to their supply chains to help educate farm managers and workers about best practices for avoidance of pyrrolizidine alkaloid (PA) contamination.

Guidance on allergens in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Free guidance for AHPA members

AHPA has published a revised version of the guidance document titled “Compliance with the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA) for Marketers of Chinese Herbal Products” to include the requirements of the recently adopted Food Allergy Safety, Treatment, Education, and Research Act of 2021 (FASTER Act), which adds sesame to the list of major food allergens that require labeling in the United States. The new requirements in the FASTER Act amend the definition of “major food allergen” in FALCPA and take effect on January 1, 2023.
